Nickel electroplating is a widely used process in the manufacturing industry to provide a protective and aesthetic pleasing coating on various substances. The quality and characteristics of nickel plating can be significantly improved by incorporating additives and brighteners into the electroplating bath. Additives are substances added to modify the deposition process and improve the properties of nickel coating. Brighteners are additives which improve the appearance of nickel coating by influencing the electro-crystallization process to produce shiny, reflective surface.
The key types of additives and brighteners are as under:
Carriers / Primary Brighteners
They are organic compounds which refine the grain structure of nickel deposits. They enhance the basic properties of the nickel deposits such as ductility, stress reduction, making the coating more durable and aesthetically pleasing.
Some of the carriers are benzene sulphonic acid, saccharin, and allyl sulphonic acid.
Secondary Brighteners
They work with primary brighteners to produce brilliant finish and excellent levelling properties. They improve the overall brightness and uniformity of the nickel coating, ensuring a high quality finish across a broad current density range.
Some of the secondary brighteners are formaldehyde chloral hydrate, o-sulpho benzaldehyde, and thiourea.
Wetting Agents
They are used to wet the metal surface to prevent defects such as pitting or uneven coating. They help in producing a consistent and defect free nickel coating, enhancing both the appearance and performance of plated parts.
Wetting agents can be classified as foaming and non-foaming types, depending upon the application requirements.
pH Buffers
pH buffers are necessary for maintaining the stability of the nickel plating solution. They prevent formation of nickel hydroxide, which can leave to uneven deposits and gas generation.
Boric acid is used as a common pH buffer.
Incorporation of these additives and brighteners into the electroplating process can enhance the quality, efficiency and sustainability of the coating. The electroplating operations can be optimized to meet higher standards of performance and environment responsibility.
