Commonly used Chemicals in Cosmetics

A cosmetic is any product which is used for cleaning, enhancing or altering the appearance of the complexion, skin, nails or hair. Common examples of cosmetics are make-up, skincare products, nail polish, fragrance etc.

For making cosmetics, many chemicals are used. Some of the key categories of chemicals used are:

  • Moisturisers: They help in softening the skin, keeping it hydrated and thus nourishing the skin. For e.g. glycerine, mineral oil etc.
  • Surfactants: They help in creating lather and foam which removes the oils and dirt present. For e.g. sodium lauryl sulfate, sodium laureth sulfate, cocamidopropyl betaine etc.
  • Fragrances: They are natural or synthetic ingredients used in products to provide a pleasant scent. For e.g. vanillin, cinnamaldehyde etc.
  • Colorants: They are used to provide a desired colour, hues or shades to a specific product. For e.g. titanium dioxide, iron oxides etc.
  • Anti-oxidants: They protect the skin from damage caused by environmental factors like pollution and ultra-violet radiation. For e.g. vitamins C and E, coenzyme Q10, green tea extract, resveratrol etc.
  • Ultra-violet filters: These are specifically used in sunscreens and other sun protection products to shield the skin from the harmful effects of the sun. For e.g. zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, avobenzone, octinoxate, etc.
  • Exfoliants: They are natural or chemical substances which help in removing dead skin cells. For e.g. glycolic acid, lactic acid, salicylic acid etc.
  • Silicones: They are used to provide a smooth and silky texture and enhance the spreadability of the cosmetic on the skin. For e.g. dimethicone, cyclopentasiloxane, cyclomethicone etc.
  • Preservatives: They are added to increase the shelf life of the product. For e.g. methylparaben, propylparaben, phenoxyethanol, etc.
